Plant with a Purpose
Did you know that what you plant could help prevent and attract specific pests?
While traditional pest control is always helpful, here are 5 plants that you can add to your garden to add some extra pest prevention to your home. Being purposeful with your planting is a terrific way to add another line of defense!
Lavender: If planted in full sun with soil that has good drainage, Lavender can survive in South Carolina. Lavender is such a great plant for repelling moths, mosquitoes, and fleas. Not only do they repel pests that can cause damage but they can also repel flies!
Chrysanthemums: With these beautiful flowing plants, watering and pinching are important to see them flourish. The soil must be moist but never overly wet. While the flower alone is enough to plant these, these blooms contain pyrethrum. This chemical is used to discourage ants, ticks, fleas, spiders, roaches, and Japanese beetles from taking over your garden.
Marigolds: Aphids are kind of like house guests that often outstay their welcome! They come and you have to work hard to make them leave! Planting marigolds are the perfect plant to add to your garden in order for them to keep moving when it comes to your pants. They need lots of light so they do not mildew but you will be glad you added them to your garden to repel aphids and mosquitos.
Petunias: These are yet another plant to help repel the insects we are not often a fan of. The plants often catch insects such as Japanese beetles, aphids, leafhoppers, and more with their sticky hairs.
Mint: The smell of the mint leaves repels mosquitoes and ants. Mint will take over any space where it is planted. This means it may be best to plant this invasive plant in a planter around the garden rather than actually in the garden. You can even use the mint to create your own bug spray when you are out and about.
